Root Canal (Endodontics):

Root canals are not as scary or painful as they were in the past and can relieve a lot of pain!

Endodontics is the dental specialty that deals with the nerves of the teeth. Root canals are the most well known and notorious procedure in the industry and the most common procedure relating to endodontics. When a tooth becomes infected, it is usually related to the nerves in the roof of the tooth. Infected nerves need to be removed or the infection can turn into an abscess which is a much more serious problem that can lead to bone loss in the jaw.

Before a root canal can be started, the area around the tooth is numbed with a local anesthetic. The dentist will then drill down into the tooth to create an opening into the canal that they can then be able to remove the infected tissue and clean the canal. Once the infection has been removed, the space is filled with a sealant called gutta percha and then fitted with a crown. The addition of a crown will not only improve the appearance of a tooth, but more importantly make it much more likely that the root canal is successful.

Even though the term “root canal” is a frightening one for a patient to hear, the benefits of the procedure and advances in dental technology have made it much less painful and “scary” to undergo. Local anesthetics and proper pain medication allow the procedure to be performed with little to even no pain involved in most cases. There may be some soreness following the procedure, but no more than most dental procedures. It will also relieve pain from the infection and allow you to enjoy all the foods you love without fear of pain from head, cold, or biting too hard. If you are experiencing tooth pain, call your dentist today!
