Crowns:

Crowns are a reliable way to recover your smile that lasts about 10-15 years

As we grow older, our teeth naturally begin to weaken and can become more susceptible to problems such as decay, cracks, discoloration, and other unfortunate complications. If your dentist notices that a tooth is weakened, cracked, or decayed, it may be necessary to place a crown to ensure that there are no additional problems with the tooth.

A natural looking crown can be made out of porcelain, but crowns can also be made out of porcelain fused to metal or a full golden crown. Porcelain crowns are best for matching the natural look and feel of your teeth, and can be matched to the shades of your other teeth.

The process of installing a crown involves 2-3 trips to the dentist. Before the procedure begins, a local anesthetic is given so that you will not be in any physical discomfort. On the first visit, the existing tooth will be reshaped so the crown can be placed over it. Once this is done, a mold is taken of not only the affected tooth but those surrounding ones as well to ensure that the new crown will fit comfortably. The dentist will place a temporary crown to protect the tooth until the permanent crown is made.

The dental lab takes about 2 to 3 weeks to create the new crown and return it to the dentist. When it is received, you will have another appointment for the dentist to place the new crown. Once again, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area and ensure that you are in no physical discomfort while the dentist places the crown with a type of dental cement to keep it in place.

Crowns are durable, and will give you back your smile for about 10-15 years, and should be cared for just like any other tooth with regular flossing and brushing. Call us today to learn more about how crowns can help give you back your smile!
